Hanan Michaeli, age 96, an early Israel pioneer who has been with Da’at from the start, tells his story to Expeditions. From his Berlin birth in the midst of the turmoil of World War I, to leaving Germany at the age of 20 for Palestine and his adventures as a young man in a strange, new land, Hanan’s story is uniquely tied to Israel’s founding and early history. Hanan went where he was needed: Kibbutz Sha’ar Hanegev, the Dead Sea Works, Kfar Szold in the Upper Galilee, eventually ending up in Jerusalem where he spent the remainder of his professional career. For Hanan, Israel is home.
